A Summary of Tonbridge

This market town dates back to well before Norman times, having the remains of a Norman castle which is open to the public.  The award-winning Tourist Information Office is situated in the castle grounds and has cassette-playing guided tours of the castle available.   The castle is an English Heritage managed site.

Tonbridge School is one of the foremost educational institutions in the country and has splendid buildings within a few minutes walk of Tonbridge centre.  There are 14 "Walks in and around Tonbridge" compiled by the Tonbridge Civic Society available from the Tourist Office; alternatively, the West Kent Walking and Outdoor Group often arrange guided walks around the Tonbridge Area.   Also the Friends of the Dunorlan Medical Group arrange walks on the last Sunday each month.  Tonbridge is directly on the Wealdway Walk (80 miles - Gravesend  to Eastbourne), the Eden Valley Walk (15 miles - Edenbridge to Tonbridge) and the recently completed Medway Valley Walk (28 miles - Rochester to Tonbridge).  The Greensand Way passes 2 miles North of Tonbridge (110 miles - Haslemere to Ham Street).

The town lies on the River Medway.  The river splits into two channels as it passes through Tonbridge necessitating two major river bridges.  This provides the town with many riverside walks leading out into the nearby country, passing river locks on the journey.  There are also organised cycle-touring holidays available, or why not hire a Classic Car and explore the beautiful Weald of Kent in worthy style.

There is a large, well-maintained public park bounded on all sides by the River Medway.  The river is navigable and has many boats moored.  In the park is a recently built Swimming Pool, and one of the most comprehensive children's play areas in Kent.  There is a miniature railway which runs most summer weekends. Picnicking in the park is an absolute delight.  There are putting, bowls and tennis facilities for the more sporty.

There are many properties and places of interest within a half hour or so of Tonbridge (35 in our list at the moment, and expanding) , among them being a number of National Trust properties.
