The University of Kent

The University of Kent was founded in 1965 at Canterbury, but now has centres in Tonbridge, the major new Pembroke campus at Chatham Maritime and Brussels in addition to its involvement with French partner institutions in the University of the Transmanche.

based on the First Floor of Block A of the KCC Adult Education Building in Avebury Avenue, offers 3 levels of Part-time undergraduate study - Certificate, Diploma and Degree and some Post-graduate study. We have two fully equipped teaching rooms, a library/IT facility and a reception area with administrative offices. We are pleased to partner West Kent College, and be able to use the Langton building on their Brook Street Campus for the delivery of some University of Kent courses.

Classes are usually of 2 hours duration at the same time each week in the daytime or evening, Monday to Friday. We currently offer the following subjects:

" Kentish History
" Medieval & Modern History
" Theory & Practice of Local History

With specialist lecturers from the University of Kent and the company of other people who share your interest and motivation these popular Saturday courses are available throughout the year in a wide variety of subjects.

Day Schools provide an excellent opportunity if you are simply curious or if you wish to extend your knowledge in a particular subject. Day Schools take place at our Tonbridge Centre and also at our Canterbury and Medway campuses.

Student Support Services

In addition to the Personal Academic Support System via the programme of study, the University provides professional support to meet a diversity of needs. Listed below are details of the services offered to students based at the Avebury Avenue Centre and West Kent College.

1. Library and Information Services - Tonbridge & West Kent College

The main collection is housed at the Avebury Avenue Centre. The Information Services staff based at Tonbridge are Denyse Straker and Julie Flecknoe. Opening times vary according to term dates.


2. Study Skills - Student Learning Advisory Service (SLAS - part of the Unit for the Enhancement of Learning and Teaching.)

This service provides information and advice on effective learning at university; its resources are available to all staff and students of the University. We are a resource for all academic disciplines, for undergraduate and postgraduate students, and the full student age range; everyone is welcome. Topics on which we offer guidance/run study skills sessions include:

" improving the quality of written assignments
" learning from lectures and seminars
" oral presentations
" managing your reading load
" note-taking
" revision and exam techniques
" time management and confidence building
" planning dissertations and other long projects.


3. The Careers & Guidance Service

All Tonbridge students are able to access the Careers and Guidance Service based at the new Pembroke site, Medway. Help is available irrespective of ethnic background, religious beliefs, age, gender or abilities. The service is free, impartial and confidential.

The Resources Room at Medway is well stocked with postgraduate prospectuses, postgraduate funding information and careers information for potential accountants to zoologists via nurses, palaeontologists and stuntmen! See also the comprehensive university careers website at www.kent.ac.uk/careers


Events Calendar

In September we hosted a stimulating and highly enjoyable Evening of Poetry. Poems were read by published University of Kent academics Patricia Debney (winner of the 2004 Poetry Business Book & Pamphlet Competition), Lynne Rees (founder of the Apple House Poetry School) and Susan Wicks (winner of the Aldeburgh Poetry Festival prize. Many copies of their books were sold during the evening.

Our term time office hours are usually
Monday - Thursday 9 am to 5 pm and Friday 9.30 am to 1 pm.

However, you may leave any written correspondence in the drop-box situated on our First Floor Reception Desk.
