| Tonbridge Rotary Club was formed in 1924 and is now a
part of a world-wide organisation of over 29,500 Clubs in most countries
in the world.
Membership of the Club is by invitation only from members, and is
drawn from the business and professional men from Tonbridge and the
immediate area.
With a motto of 'Service Above Self', the club seeks to serve the
Community through various avenues.
Vocational Service
The members use their experience and skills to encourage people to
develop skills by, for instance, sponsoring an annual Young Speakers'
Competition in conjunction with Young Enterprise. Some social issues
are also addressed, such as sponsoring performances of the Theatre Adad -creating drug awareness- in several schools. Book prizes are
offered to a selection of schools for pupils who perform service to the
local community.
Community Service
Although the Club is not primarily a fund-raising organisation there
is some direct action in the local community. This includes outings
for pensioners, games evenings with the Veterans Club and residents of the
Care Village. Donations are also given to local
charities. These are funded by various efforts, including
running a Christmas Car Park (Courtesy of Miller Freeman plc) and a
Festival in the Castle Grounds.
International Service
We also have an interest in International Relief. Provision has been
made of Emergency and Aqua Boxes to a nationally organised resource for
use for relief in disaster areas. Donations are also given to
International Charities, such a Sight Savers and Hope and Homes for
Children. We have close links with Rotary Clubs in other countries,
particularly with Goes in Holland, hut also Halle in Belgium and Senlis in
France.
Rotary Foundation
Important work is done by the Rotary Foundation, which organises
Educational Scholarships and trips of various types and international
relief and support efforts throughout the world.
Other Activities
We are not serious all the time! There are a number of social events
every year - dinners, theatre trips, a golf competition etc.
Meetings are held weekly on Thursdays at 1pm at the Rose and Crown
Hotel, Tonbridge.
