Tonbridge Civic Society is an independent non-party,
non-sectional body concerned with all parts of the town.
By means of talks, meetings. publications and exhibitions it aims to
promote and encourage:
- interest in and care for the beauty, history and character of Tonbridge
and its vicinity;
- the preservation and enhancement of features of general public interest;
- the maintenance of high standards of architecture and town-planning in
the Tonbridge area.
The Society works to achieve these aims by representing its views to the
Local Authorities and supporting, where appropriate, the measures they take to make
Tonbridge a more pleasant place in which to live, to work, and to visit.

The Society helped to establish the town's main Conservation Area; it
played a major part, with the Bordyke Building Trust, in the preservation of Blair House,
a listed timber-framed building in the High Street; it has instigated tree-planting and
floral-planting schemes; it drew up a detailed report advocating cycle ways and cycle
parks in the town and it is represented in the Town Forum.
In August 2000 the Society made proposals for rebuilding and
redeveloping the Tonbridge Railway Station site."
It regularly arranges talks followed by discussions, monitors planning
applications, presents Civic Awards for excellence in new building and development, holds
an Awards Dinner and a midsummer Garden Party, keeps a record of listed and important
buildings, contributes to the National Heritage Weekend and organises visits and
excursions for its members.
It publishes a regular Newsletter, a booklet of walks "14
Walks in and around Tonbridge",
and "Historic Tonbridge, a guided walk through the
old town" (jointly with the Historical Society)
In 2003, the Society celebrated its 40th year by
publishing "Today's Tonbridge" - an illustrated
book of some 200 pages about its campaigns and achievements in relation
to the major issues affecting the character and appearance of the
town since 1963.
A"Walk around Tonbridge"
and a "Walk around the Fortifications"
are available on this website.
