TONBRIDGE on the INTERNET

Tonbridge Recreational Ground

This is a large, well-maintained public park bounded on all sides by the River Medway.  In its early years it was the Tonbridge Horseracing Course, which gives one an idea of its size.  From here one can walk to the Haysden Country Park consisting of 160 acres of beautiful countryside, including the Barden Lake.  (See photographs).

It is on the Weald Way Walk,  (a different www!)  which passes through Tonbridge on its way to Groombridge.  Tonbridge is a good over-night stopping place for this increasingly popular walk which winds its way through some of the lovliest parts of Kent.  This is just one of many walks which start or pass through Tonbridge.  The Medway walk from Tonbridge to Rochester using the river banks and towpaths is excellent, as the author can personally atest.  Details of other walks can be found in the Tourist Office, and the West Kent Walking and Outdoor Group arrange guided walks, often touching Tonbridge.

The river is navigable and has many boats moored round the perimeter, one of them being H.M. Britannia's long boat once used for transporting the Queen to state functions when the Britannia was in its heyday.

There is a public (no charge) slipway for small boats, adjacent to a large carpark (free at weekends, after 12 noon on Saturdays).

In the park is a recently built Swimming Pool,

and one of the most comprehensive children's play areas in Kent.  (A dog-free zone)  with safe-surface areas

There is a miniature railway which runs most summer weekends.

Picnicking in the park is an absolute delight.

There is putting, crazy golf, bowls and tennis for the more sporty.
